Poster Preparation

Before creating our own poster i wanted to research into what other types of posters that are out there. I felt as though these posters were particularly different- as apposed to the big blockbuster films which have famous actor's faces all over them.

1. I chose this because i liked the layering, although it is targeted for a wide audience, there are several different images which have been merged together to create this interesting final piece.

2. This poster does not feature an actor. Instead it relies on an image which sums up the main themes of the film.

3. This piece has been made up of layers much like the first poster. These images however are much harder to distinguish, representing a film that has no hard narrative. 

Creating a story

Life. It can be tough. The people around us can blur our vision, people have the power to force us to choose pathways we do not wish to take. So what happens when you stop living your life for other people and you start seeing the things YOU wish to see? 

You see things you never thought you would, or could. You realise that you are not lost, you are not invisible.

Sound

Story
As our piece has no clear narrative- only the themes of travel, words and a sense of finding your self- we thought applying our footage to a poem would help string together what we are trying to say. After googling poems, we didn't feel passionate enough about anything we came across and so we decided to throw out words and phrases in order to create our own poem.

After brainstorming a list of words we thought a small story-like narrative would be more suiting. We wanted to try and match some of the words that are spoken with visuals. 

Music

As well as a voice over i thought a soft, acoustic piece of music would suit the background. Music like Bon Iver's- Holocene. 

A track like this doesn't take too much attention off what's going on. Due to copyright issues we cannot use this exact track, but i want to create a similar sounding track using garage band.

Making Changes

After receiving the feedback from our teacher we went back over the points that had been made and I made the changes. The audience liked the first image however they felt as though it stood out too much and did not fit in with the rest of the footage. After attempting to change the saturation and colour in premier to make it similar to the others we decided it was not working, so because of this, we decided to delete it all together. To replace this shot we added in the boat footage shown in image two. The audience felt as though this fitted better and maintained the style of the film. The ship itself moved along the screen in a diagonal line, and our teacher didn't like the ship travelling at this angle. I rotated the footage so that the boat was level and this worked much better.
The audience weren't too keen on image 4 as they felt as though it did not fit in with the other text. To create this effect instead of zooming in, Miranda did the opposite and zoomed out so that the DIY lens hood was visible. The finished effect showed something more original and we were really happy with it. As we liked the effect so much we decided to incorporate more like this, so that image 4 didn't look so out of place. Miranda tried again, and finished with image 3. Audience members likes the adding of the 'wander' shot and felt it maintained the quirkiness and originality of the film.
A lot of the feedback we have received comments on the calm feeling which they receive whilst watching our film. The majority of the shots are slow paced (image 6) and it was suggested that we use some quicker footage. Miranda filmed some more traffic scenes which I then sped up when editing (image 5). To keep the same theme throughout I added a directional blur which blurred the footage slightly and created more pace. Audience members loved the change in slow and paced and said it explored all types of travel, whether they be slow and graceful or fast.

After mastering the Bokeh effect, we set out when the lights would be at their brightest. Apart from it being absolutely freezing, we are really happy with the footage. Its such a step up from our AS projects, and i am very proud of it. We are unsure as to how we could link it to the drift stop motion effect and so presented it to our teacher to receive her feedback. 

Feedback

• Very ambitious, the first she has seen to try this effect and a definite step up from our AS projects.
• Need to include more daytime shots, is there a way we can create words using this technique in the daytime?
• Try using reflections of things, find objects that light bounces off- Like in The Words Of Bokeh where he captures the reflection on water. 
• Look at Tracy Emin's illuminated sign. Some of the lights reminded her of american motels
• Can we use nature to create words? eg leaves or sticks
• How do we travel? you often wander by foot
• Look into other forms of transport- trains, buses, plane's
• How will the audience view it?
• Research shapes and how the evolve
• Think about a longer phrase and the different types of travel
• We need to think about influences in terms of narrative and justify what we do

Success!

After having a play around with the camera, and then trying out the technique on a video camera we had success! We were quick to set out one evening with our make shift lens caps- and try the technique for ourselves.

Editing Inspiration

When filming our experimental piece i wanted to do some more research on the video sharing website- Vimeo. Below are a few pieces i was inspired by.



This piece uses layers of coulourful shapes, and various other objects. When editing together our final piece i want to blend together lots of bokeh lights to create something more original and refreshing to look at.



The Fragments of Iceland is one of my favourite pieces- a long with The Words Of Bokeh- that i have come across over the period of this project. I find the editing technique and style truly amazing. I was drawn in right from the very beginning and watched a number of times. The footage was perfectly editied to fit the music, when the music became more up beat so did the cuts between the pictures. Linking water with various other other water related elements, and the panning shots of various different locations which have been cut together are amazing. We are taken on a journey with seamless editing- i want our piece to have this quality about it too. Not only did this piece completely captivate me but it inspired me to create something of its quality, something that makes people feel inspired to create an experimental piece themselves.

Editing like the example above, where we see the blanket blowing in the wind which then cuts to the clothes blowing in the wind. Although different locations and colouring, they share this particular element, which makes it work. I want this style to show through in my editing, perhaps linking transport to transport or colours to colours.

This piece here uses photographs combined with stop motion and live projection mapping techniques.
To take our piece further we thought about combining the stop motion effect with our bokeh lights. Neither of us have tried this technique before and so it would be a challenge for the both of us. I chose this particular clip because they use lights as well, although theirs are projections they are till using layers- in theory- to create this finished effect.



Although perhaps not an aspect that we could incorporate into our film, it is very inspiring. Its unique and i personally haven't seen anything like it. Although our final piece will be influenced from many other pieces we have seen it is important for us to create something unique and personal to us.
